New-car sales got off to a solid start in 2025, rising by 4 percent versus 2024 to 3.9 million vehicles, as the threat of the recently imposed tariffs on imported vehicles loomed. The growth was largely driven by pickup trucks and hybrids, and while trucks and SUVs still dominate, affordable sedans still found a sizable audience.

Michael Simari|Car and Driver
The Explorer, a longtime American staple, saw its sales drop a whopping 19 percent in the first quarter as Ford introduced the refreshed 2025 model. Still, it was the second bestselling mid-size SUV through the first quarter of the year.
